I will have no man in my boat who is not afraid of a whale.

Although later Sassoon did marry, and fathered a son, his nature was predominantly homosexual. Sometimes Robbie's candour on the subject dismayed him, however, which was the reason why sometimes he stayed at London club, rather than at R0bbie's when he was in town.

As an infantry officer, Sassoon distinguished himself by wild and heroic exploits (he subsequently won an M.C., which was a distinguished British award), ...
"an extremely brave and able officer, nicknamed 'Mad Jack' by his men" one of whom remarked "[i]t was only once in a blue moon . . . that we had an officer like Mr. Sassoon" (Fussell 91). For himself though (and especially after the death of a fellow officer, David Thomas, who had been his close friend), Sassoon was sometimes foolhardy in taking chances to meet the enemy face-to-face. On one occasion, he single-handedly captured a German trench, only to then plop down and pull out a book of poetry from his pocket. On April 16th, 1917, Sassoon was wounded in the shoulder and shipped home to recuperate. There, goaded by Bertrand Russell and others, Sassoon's disillusionment over the war (for one thing, his brother Hamo had been killed at Gallipoli in 1915) solidified into his famous protest statement against the continuation of the war, which was eventually read before the House of Commons on July 30th, and published in The Times the next day. Sassoon then politely went A.W.O.L. (declining to report for further duty), threw his M.C. ribbon into the River Mersey, and waited for martyrdom. However the Army hesitated to punish such a public hero as Sassoon (one whose poetry was read and admired by Churchill, among others)

... Vivian and Ronald Firbank organized a little dinner party for him. Vivian ordered food from the Trinity Hall kitchens, while Firbank provided Moet de Chardon 1884 from his wealthy father's celebrated wine cellar. Notable among the six other guests was the breathtakingly handsome poet from Robbie's old college, King's, Rupert Brooke, as carefully selected for the guest's enjoyment as the food and the champagne.

Ага...an affectionate echo, perhaps, of his first great love, the young army officer David Thomas. ...
